EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2011 THE FIRE MARSHAL'S OFFICE IS CHARGING A FEE FOR FIRE CODE PERMITS AS SET BY THE UNIFORM FIRE CODE. TYPICALLY FOR THE OCCASIONAL USE OF A BUILDING, OPEN FLAME AND OR COOKING, TENTS, AND OR COOKING UNDER TENTS WILL BE A FEE OF $54.00 IN THE FORM OF A CHECK OR MONEY ORDER ONLY AND MADE PAYABLE TO THE:

DO I NEED A FIRE CODE PERMIT TO USE MY TENT, CANOPY, OR TENSIONED MEMBRANE STRUCTURE ON COUNTY OWNED PROPERTY?

What is a canopy?

It is a structure, enclosure, or shelter constructed of fabric or pliable materials supported by any manner, except by air or the contents it protects, and is open without side walls or drops on 75 percent or more of the perimeter.

What is a tent?

Basically the same as the above except that it has more than 25 percent of the perimeter covered by sidewalls or drops.

What is a tensioned membrane structure?

It is an air-inflated, air-supported, cable or framed-covered structure.

If you are planning to use one of the above items at a "County Event" and the tent, canopy, or tensioned membrane structure is greater than 900 square feet in size or more than 30 feet in any dimension, you need a fire code permit.

THE FEE IS $54.00

NOTE: All other tents, canopies, and tensioned membrane structures that are greater in size than 16,800 square feet in area or greater than 140 feet in any direction will require a Construction Code Permit from the Municipal Construction Official.

DO I NEED A FIRE CODE PERMIT FOR A GATHERING OF PEOPLE FOR AMUSEMENT, ENTERTAINMENT, OR MERCHANTILE TYPE PURPOSES IN COUNTY OWNED BUILDINGS?

If the facility that you will be leasing, renting, or occupying is not affiliated to you or your organization you will need a "Fire Code Permit". As far as how many occupants can be at an event depends on many factors such as the use of tables and chair, or just standing room. Floor layout sketches showing how you wish to utilize an area must be submitted with the application for consideration. This shall include the total number of attendees expected. The Fire Marshal may restrict the number requested to ensure the safety of everyone attending the event, and require additional conditions. There may be restrictions imposed on what type and how much decorations you bring into a facility.

DO I NEED A FIRE CODE PERMIT FOR COOKING OPERATIONS OR STERNO POTS ON COUNTY OWNED PROPERTY?

Whether it is in a building, under a tent / canopy, in the open air, or in a mobile unit and you are using sterno devices, open flame cooking, or deep frying you need a permit.

Yes, and there are specific guidelines that must be followed for consideration of that request.

Yes, and there are many prior approvals, requirements, and the actual permit is granted by the County Fire Marshal.
