Resource Conservation

Welcome to the website of the Department of Resource Conservation. Our mission is to preserve and protect the land and water resources of the County, to protect taxpayers’ investment in farmland preservation through programs and services designed to assist the agricultural community, and to provide families with places to play, learn, and enjoy! The following divisions and programs make up the Department:

Extension Services

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension Office has been supporting the farming community for 100 years through its research and educational programs. Extension is also home to 4-H, the Master Gardener Program, and Family & Community Health Services. The County Board of Agriculture is supported by Extension Services.

Farmland Preservation Program

The Farmland Preservation Program is committed to preserving a permanent agricultural land base and maintaining an environment that supports a viable agricultural industry. Over 28,000 acres of farmland have been preserved to date through this County program.

Municipal Park Development Program

Through this program, grants are offered to municipalities for development of recreational facilities and assistance in preserving local farmland and open space.

Division of Parks

The Division is responsible for maintaining the County Parks System which includes regional parks, canoe and hiking trails, museums, historic sites, the County Fairgrounds and the Rancocas Nature Center. Family events, programs, lecture series, nature walks, art shows and more can be found at parks facilities throughout the year!

Open Space Preservation and Parks Development Program

The County Parks and Open Space Master Plan calls for an interconnected system of regional parks, greenways and trails that will give every resident an opportunity to get out and enjoy the outdoors and the scenic landscapes that we are fortunate to have in Burlington County. The Program is responsible for acquisition of the land that will become part of the County Parks System and developing that land for public enjoyment. The Local Open Space Program which provides cost share funding to municipalities for open space acquisition is also administered through this program.

Wastewater Management Planning

Water Resources Program

The Water Resources Program provides planning coordination for water resource management related activities throughout the County. These activities include the County-wide wastewater management plan, municipal stormwater management plan review, watershed plans, and critical water supply area issues.
