Lead Acid Batteries

Storage batteries with lead electrodes and that contain dilute sulfuric acid as the electrolyte. These include starting batteries, such as vehicle batteries, marine batteries and deep cell batteries used to power vehicles or marine accessories such as trolling motors, winches or lights.

Hazards

• Lead acid batteries used in automobiles, trucks and boats have a high content of toxic and highly corrosive sulfuric acid.
• The lead from these batteries can be recovered through smelting.  
• IT IS ILLEGAL TO DISPOSE OF LEAD ACID BATTERIES IN YOUR TRASH
  

Management Options

• Lead acid batteries are usually accepted at automotive centers.
• Check to see if your local drop off will accept lead acid batteries. Visit your municipal website.
• If your town does not have a drop off, you may bring lead acid batteries to the County's Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Mansfield or call 609-499-5200.
