[ARCHIVED] Health Department Offers Free Skin Cancer Screenings on May 30th

The original item was published from September 21, 2015 4:26 PM to September 21, 2015 4:27 PM

May is Skin Cancer Prevention Month.  Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, and it is mainly caused by exposure to Ultraviolet rays from the sun.  It can also be caused by excessive use of tanning booths and sunlamps.

The good news is that most cases of skin cancer can be easily cured when it is detected and treated early.  Some of the best ways to prevent skin cancer include:

  • Staying out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm
  • Use SPF 15 or higher sunscreen, and apply every 2 hours, as well as after swimming or sweating
  • Wear proper clothing and a hat and try to stay in the shade
  • Check your skin regularly in order to monitor changes

To help residents prevent or detect skin cancer, the Burlington County Health Department will be offering free skin cancer screenings on Saturday, May 30th from 9am to 12pm at the Burlington County Agricultural Center Farmers’ Market.  Pre-registration is not required and walk-ins are welcome.

Along with free screenings, volunteer healthcare professionals will be offering free sunscreen to participants, as well as information about how to protect their skin.

For more information, contact the Burlington County Health Department at (609) 265-5548 or visit their website.
