    Historic Smithville Park & Smith's Woods

    For over 550 years, the Salem Oak stood in the historic city of Salem NJ. It was the sole surviving tree from the original forest that pre-dated European settlement, and its massive size made it one of New Jersey’s most celebrated trees. In 2019, the tree crashed to the ground, but before it fell, acorns were collected and planted. Burlington County Parks received a Salem Oak seedling from the NJ Tree Academy, which we will be planting at the conclusion of this interpretive nature program. Participation in the tree planting is optional.
