[ARCHIVED] Burlington County Commissioners Spotlighting Local Farmers Markets

Burlington County residents don’t need to travel far to find fresh, locally-grown produce and other delicacies.

There are dozens of community farmers markets and farm stands located throughout the county, and the Burlington County Commissioners are encouraging residents to shop at them during the remainder of this year’s summer and fall seasons.

“Burlington County is home to more than 67,000 acres of preserved farmland, which is the most of any county in New Jersey, and we continue to actively pursue the preservation of more of the remaining farmland and open space so that agriculture remains strong,” said Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Allison Eckel, the liaison to the Department of Resource Conservation, Parks and Farmland Preservation. “At the same time, we’re also looking for additional ways we can help Burlington County farmers to succeed. One way is by encouraging residents to shop at farm stands or farm markets. Buying locally sourced fruits, vegetables, and other farm products is a healthy choice, and it helps keep agriculture a strong industry in our county.”

To help encourage residents to shop at local farmers markets, the Commissioners plan to visit some of the county’s community farmers markets over the next few months to showcase them and their vendors. Commissioner Eckel kicked off the initiative last week by touring the Marlton Farmers Market alongside Evesham Mayor Jaclyn Veasy and Councilmembers Heather Cooper and Christian Smith.

Located at Evesboro Downs Park (131 Evesboro-Medford Road), the Marlton Farmers Market is open every Wednesday from 4 PM to 7 PM from June through early September. Shoppers will find outstanding fruits and vegetables, baked goods, home goods, food trucks, artisan products and other great items. This year, the market has also hosted various activities, including a water slide, petting zoo, magic show, Jeep show and more.

This week’s Sept. 3 market will feature a cooking demonstration from a local chef.

“Evesham is gaining national attention as one of the most sought-after places to live in America because of attractions like the Marlton Farmers Market,” said Mayor Jacqueline Veasy. “The market brings our residents together and helps support area farms and small business vendors. We’re wrapping up one of our best seasons yet, and we are excited the Burlington County Commissioners are helping to spotlight our market and others across the county.”

Council members Smith and Cooper said the market helps create a sense of community in the township.

“The Marlton Farmers Market is much more than just a place to shop. It’s become a gathering spot where families and friends can meet, interact and enjoy a summer evening outdoors,” said Councilman Smith. “There’s still one market day left this season and we’re hoping for a big turnout. If you haven’t visited yet, make sure to come out and discover all the great shopping and family fun.”

“One of the things that makes Evesham such a great community is our residents’ support for local small businesses, and the market’s success reflects that,” added Councilwoman Cooper. “Many of the market vendors live in town or nearby. They’re not just selling foods and products -- they’re also interacting with their own neighbors and friends.”

Farmers market directory

In addition to touring local markets, the County has updated its online farmers market directory to make it easier for residents to locate and shop at these important community resources.

The farmers market directory is located on the Burlington County website within the Business Resources  section. Each listing includes the market’s name, location and hours of operations, as well as links to their own websites.

Among the markets listed is the Burlington County Farmers Market, which is held every Saturday from 8:30 AM to 1 PM at the Burlington County Agricultural Center, 500 Centerton Road, Moorestown. The County market was crowned the best in New Jersey in 2024 by the American Farmland Trust’s annual poll and was also recently crowned one of the four markets best in the nation during this year’s USA Today’s 10Best poll.

Voting for the American Farmland Trust’s 2025 poll is now underway. To vote for the Burlington County Farmers Market or local markets from the county, go to https://markets.farmland.org/markets/313985 .

“The Burlington County Farmers Market has received national attention as one of the best in America, but we know there are many other outstanding farmers markets in our county that we want to promote,” said Commissioner Eckel. “The directory is an excellent resource for residents to find new and convenient locations to buy their favorite Jersey Fresh foods and handcrafted creations.”

More than three dozen markets are currently listed in the directory. Farms and community markets interested in being listed should email the Burlington County Public Information Office at news@co.burlington.nj.us.
