Tuesday Talk: Spring Hike

Get out your hiking boots and join Jen to observe a fantastic array of life in the woods. From early spring butterflies to interesting plants, this unique sandy pine barrens-like habitat has tremendous species diversity. This hike will be about 2.5 miles on natural terrain including some hills. Hiking shoes/boots and a walking stick are highly recommended. There are no restrooms at this location. Difficulty: moderate, natural terrain. Miles: 2-2.5.

Did you ever want to learn Country Line Dances? Now is your chance to learn the basics in this beginner's Country Line dancing class! This class is geared towards people who never Country Line danced before. Instructor Jeremy Duncan will be giving dance lessons throughout this hour-long program.

Spring Painting Workshop

Celebrate Spring! Be inspired by the colors of spring florals in this 2- hour workshop that will have you loosening your brush stroke. Reviews of composition, acrylic color and paint brush moves will guide you to create your painting. Additional mixed mediums will be available to further your interpretive work. We supply ALL materials; you supply the creativity. Any artistic level welcome!

Yoga

Yoga is a practice of mind, body, and soul connection. It allows us to drop into the moment and move freely while nourishing ourselves fully. We will be practicing vinyasa-style yoga with an emphasis on strength with a sequence of postures that flow with breath to cultivate focus, alignment, stamina, and flexibility. We will begin and end our class with a brief meditation focused on new wellness themes each week. Registration is required. Bring a yoga mat.

Chair Yoga

Chair-based yoga offers similar benefits to traditional yoga practice, which can be done while sitting at your desk! The benefits of chair yoga are increased flexibility, Improved strength, Improved proprioception (knowing where your body is in space), Reduced stress, Reduced pain, Improved pain management skills, and better sleep. Registration is required. Chairs are provided.

Get your wands ready! Follow in Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s footsteps using a special map to find 10 hidden clues around Smithville Park. This program is a fun way to learn orienteering with a map! Did you participate previously? We have 10 new questions and answers for this adventure! Some trails are NOT suitable or accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. Costumes are welcome! No walk-ups accepted. Maximum of 6 people per party. Miles: 2.00 - natural terrain & stairs. Audience: Ages 8 and up. Knowledge of Harry Potter lore is required.

Bays, Glaciers, and Bog Iron in the Pines

Wharton State Forest is hosting a special event and partnering with Burlington County Parks to educate participants on the geologic history of the area around Batsto Village. The 2-mile walk will include a discussion of the geology of the ore deposits used for iron smelting and glass manufacturing. We will cover geologic features including former barrier islands, back bays, glacial era landforms, and stream characteristics. Participants will learn how such past geologic events created today's uplands, wetlands, vernal ponds, and streams. Led by Pierre Lacombe, retired USGS geologist. Registration opens April 1. Register through Wharton State Forest by calling the Batsto Visitor Center at (609) 561-0024.

Life that Glows

This exciting program involves using special UV flashlights that allow us to see UV-induced visible fluorescence, an amazing phenomenon that would normally be invisible to us. Various plants, invertebrates, mushrooms and more glow in different dazzling colors at night. Observations from these walks can help us to understand why certain organisms glow and reveal possible adaptive advantages. Each time we go out on these walks, we could observe something new to science! Instructor: Jen Bulava. There is a strict limit of participants and supplies. Audience: Adults and children ages 10+. Miles: 1. Difficulty: easy/moderate, natural terrain.

Park Cleanup

Help keep our environment clean and green! Participate in cleaning up litter that has made its way into the park. Bags, gloves, and grabbers will be provided. Enjoy this brand-new topic as we take the time to closely observe and learn about the plants that were present during the Carboniferous Period, 330 million years ago. Our walk around the park will take us past Equisetum and Lycopodium and other examples of ancient plants. Difficulty: easy-moderate; crushed stone or paved path with some steps. Miles: 1.8.

Birding 101

Birding is a fun and popular form of recreation, but it can be challenging and overwhelming as a beginner to know where to start. This program is for those interested in beginning birding, suitable for children and adults. Learn the essential basics for bird identification, tips for choosing binoculars, how to use binoculars, and birding do’s and don’ts. Join us in the field to see for yourself how enjoyable birding can be! Loaner binoculars will be available to those who do not have their own. Instructor: Jen Bulava. Difficulty: Easy, combination of grass & crushed stone trails. Miles: less than 1.

Photography Workshop Phytograms

Phytograms are photographic images made on silver-based film and paper that one would normally use inside of a camera or in a darkroom. In this eco-friendly workshop, students will make plant- based developers from plant materials found in nature. Using additional foraged plant materials sourced from the property, students will compose and expose directly onto photographic film using the sunlight or ultraviolet light.

Pinhole Photography Workshop

Join Heather Palecek and Parks’ Sandra C. Davis for this two-session workshop and learn the basics. On Apr 29, Heather leads an immersive 2-hour workshop, where you make your own pinhole camera, explore history of pinhole photography, composition and technique. Take your new pinhole cameras home to make pictures. On May 6, meet with Sandra and learn to develop your pinhole photographs in a darkroom. Note: We are not building cameras on May 6.
