Burlington County Hosting Nationally Recognized Suicide Prevention Speaker Emma Benoit

Home - County News Posted on November 15, 2024

The Burlington County Commissioners and Burlington County Department of Human Services are bringing suicide survivor Emma Benoit to Burlington County next week for a special free screening of the documentary film My Ascension about her life and inspiring recovery.

Following the film screening, Emma will participate in a frank and open discussion about teenage suicide and mental illness with the goal to dispel stigma and provide hope to others who are struggling with depression, anxiety or other mental illnesses.

Both the film screening and discussion will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 PM to 8 PM at the Burlington County Library, 15 Pioneer Boulevard, Westampton.

Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson said the event is a way to educate children, parents, educators and others about mental health, stigma and how to obtain assistance.

“Burlington County is committed to ending stigmas surrounding mental health conditions and we are proud to bring Emma and her inspiring message to our residents,” said Hopson, the liaison to the Department of Human Services. “By talking about mental health and suicide, we hope to generate greater understanding of these issues and what we can do to better support and assist those who are suffering. Engaging in these kinds of difficult conversations can help us find solutions.”

The film is approximately 88 minutes and details Emma’s story. For years the Louisiana teen silently struggled with anxiety and depression, ashamed to share her pain with family or friends. At age 16, she attempted to end her life and the failed attempt left her paralyzed. The film chronicles her recovery journey and her resolve to use her own experience to help other struggling teens.

“Emma’s story is an extraordinary one and we are grateful she agreed to visit Burlington County to speak directly to our residents,” said Hopson. “We want all residents to know they are not alone and that assistance is available to anyone who needs it.”

Burlington County has become a leader in improving access to youth mental health services and eliminating stigma.

In 2021, the Commissioners approved a resolution to make Burlington County a Stigma-free County and to launch a campaign to dispel misconceptions about mental health and raise awareness about available support programs.

Earlier this year the County launched Hope One For Youth, a mobile outreach unit specializing in mental health education and support services for children and teens.

“Mental health is an essential part of overall health and mental health challenges impact all ages,” said Hopson. “Our County is committed to providing help, support and hope to anyone struggling with a mental health challenge.”
